Last year, we began our long journey to become a Net-Zero company. 24Slides has always been focused on the well-being of all our colleagues and, in turn, the communities surrounding them. And what bigger community than the world that surrounds us all?
From the beginning of the year, 24Slides has been committed to putting our grain of sand on the overall goal of creating a positive impact on the environment and helping create a better, greener world. We take environmental issues very seriously, and that’s why, with the help of Better Green, a consulting group that specializes in sustainable development for businesses, we built our very first climate report. Our goal was to enhance the impact we could make, not just as individuals but as a socially responsible business too.
Even if, as a digital company, 24Slides doesn’t produce as high of a carbon monoxide footprint as other types of businesses, that doesn’t mean we’re excluded from responsibility for creating a positive impact on the environment. And we’re proud to say that 24Slides welcomes that duty with open arms.
That’s why we decided to establish September as our Green Awareness Month. We consider it critical to create actionable, practical initiatives that will allow us to help the planet and promote good practices throughout all our offices.
As a way to create more awareness about carbon emissions, we asked employees to track their commuting habits for getting to and from the office every day throughout September. This was key to not only creating consciousness about individual habits when talking about environmental issues but also to understanding better what 24Slides can do to take care of our planet.
Some of the insights we discovered from this initiative were:
– Taking public transport is the first choice for colleagues from Denmark and Peru who commute longer distances
– Denmark shows the most varied means of transportation, including bikes, public transport, electric bikes, and cars
– In Indonesia, the preferred method for commuting is by motorcycle, used mainly by colleagues traveling a distance ranging from 5 to 20+ km.
– The average commuting distance in Denmark and Peru is between 10 and 20 km, while in Indonesia, the average range goes from 5 to 10 km.
– Taking into account all of our offices, about 67% of 24Sliders commute by means of a motorcycle.
This data is not just interesting on its own; it also allows us to understand how our colleagues balance work with their personal lives, as well as to promote solutions that would create a positive impact on the environment. It is the first step in promoting sustainable solutions that are not just good for the planet but also practical for 24Slides employees.
As part of Green Awareness Month, we also focused on updating our Global Waste Management Policy to adopt best practices to reduce, reuse, and recycle energy and waste materials as much as possible. This meant implementing good environmental practices like sorting out trash, turning off A/C radiators, heaters, and lights when not in use during office hours, and implementing devices to reduce energy consumption.
By having a whole month dedicated to creating awareness about environmental issues, we’re able to put the spotlight on these topics that are so easily pushed to the side on a day-to-day basis. We’re proud that we’re a company filled with people always striving to do their best and to make a positive impact in the world.
We know there’s still a long way to go, as environmental issues will not be resolved overnight. Green Awareness Month is a way to uphold our commitment to creating a better, greener world and our launching point for new and bigger initiatives to help our planet.
