#StorytellerProgram: Embracing Sport as a Powerful Act of Self-Love

Sport as an act of self-love

This article was written by Briana, Design Manager at 24Slides Peru, as part of 24Slides’ #StorytellerProgram.

Have you ever had those days where you have some exciting things planned, but instead, you find yourself stuck in bed, barely moving from one spot to another? Trust me, I have been there. In fact, I still have those days, but I have learned how to manage them now.

We all know physical activity is key to a balanced life, but as we grow up, our busy schedules—work, family, studies—often push it aside. For me, squeezing in a bit of exercise has been a game-changer. It’s not just about staying fit—it makes me feel better, happier, and less stressed. I truly believe that sports can make a big difference in our mental health!

Let me share my journey with you…

The Very Beginning

Very early in my life, I discovered that I had too much energy. I had so much energy that I could only stay calm by keeping busy during the day, whether learning a new skill or studying. This incredible amount of energy was really useful when I was studying at the institute or doing my internship, both of which I tried to take full advantage of.

However, being in that mood for a long period was exhausting. I realized that it wasn’t a positive lifestyle. During the pandemic, this situation got worse. It was only me, my thoughts, and my four walls. ‘So, what now?’ I thought. I could keep studying but something was different: my motivation was gone.

I had heard the term ‘workaholic’ before but never paused to consider whether I fit that concept. I was so accustomed to filling every moment with work or academics that when I finally had some downtime, I felt lost and paralyzed. It became clear that I had been feeding a bad habit while avoiding other important aspects of my life—like my family, friends, and hobbies, all of which are also a part of who I am.

Once I accepted that I needed to be aware of my thoughts and feelings, I wanted to find what else I could do with my time since doing nothing wasn’t an option. Introspection was helpful, but I risked getting stuck in a loop of overthinking. That’s when I remembered that as a child, I used to be involved in activities and hobbies to relieve this toxic habit. ‘What happened to that when I grew up?’ I asked myself.

By the time the social isolation was over, I was ready to find some new activity that could change my lifestyle. I’m happy to say that I find it.

My experience with the Holos App

In the months that followed, I explored different activities. However, many were financially out of reach, as I was still studying and balancing my expenses. Fortunately for me, 24Slides offered the Peruvian team free access to the Holos App.

The Holos App offers a membership that serves as the perfect incentive for gradually trying out various activities. When exploring the application, I found activities such as yoga, swimming, boxing, mui tai, jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, dance, gym, tennis, and soccer. We could even schedule an appointment with a nutritionist, personal trainer, health coach, or psychological assistant!

After extensive research on the App, I decided to take dance classes for a season. The application has well-known partners in dance academies that I had previously wanted to try, so it was perfect timing!

My first experience was fantastic. The teachers were very clear and dynamic, making the dance styles accessible even to beginners like me. Day after day, at the end of the class, I felt more and more motivated and energized. Refining my dance skills made me feel lighter and at peace with my mind.

Soon, my workdays started to brighten up. I felt more attentive, and ideas flowed more easily. As a Design Manager, juggling complex projects can be stressful, but just when the pressure peaked, a notification from Holos would remind me that my dance class was only a few hours away. That little nudge gives me the energy I need to finish my tasks in the best mood.

After a season of enjoying dancing, I wanted to try a more intense activity, something that would really push my limits. There was when I decided to try Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art, and it turned out to be the best decision I have ever made

The start was intense—leaving classes sore and incredibly hungry after burning so much energy. But as the days passed, I felt more energized, clear-headed, and driven to keep learning and do my best every day. As the months went by and my Jiu-Jitsu techniques improved, my muscle pain diminished, and my combat skills increased, inspiring me to become more and more active in every way possible.

Practicing this sport not only kept my mind clear but also helped me tackle stress at work more effectively. I felt my confidence soar, and I became more willing to take on larger and more complex projects. I began to see challenges as opportunities for growth at work, both for myself and my team.

Last Thoughts

I used to be sedentary, consumed by thoughts, and focused solely on intellectual pursuits. Now, I feel stronger, more confident, and ready to take on new challenges that push my limits, whether in my personal or professional life.

I truly believe that sports or any kind of physical activity improves your health and helps you connect with your inner self, giving you peace, and allowing you to discover the immense potential you carry within. Incorporating sport into our daily routine is an act of self-love, a decision that reflects our desire to live fully.

Looking back, it’s clear that starting to practice sports has significantly improved my health in many ways. I will be forever grateful to 24Slides and Holos, who allowed me to achieve the balance I needed in my life.

If you empathize with my story, now is the perfect time to start moving and become the best version of yourself!
